An integrated circuit or microchip is a tiny semiconductor device that combines numerous interconnected electronic components such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors. These components are constructed on a small piece of semiconductor material such as silicon to serve a specific electronic purpose. Integrated circuits are essential to modern electronics. They are widely used in various devices, including computers, smartphones, televisions, to name a few. The capabilities of this semiconductor device range from data processing, signal amplification, and storage to power management.
ICs have several advantages over traditional circuits with discrete components, including: miniaturization, higher speed, cost efficiency, reliability, and high transistor density. These circuits are constructed as a single unit, which has been mass-produced and modularized since its invention. Integrated circuits are the most prominent type of semiconductor technology and are poor passives' precursors, MCUs, and other microcontrollers, transistors of various kinds, controllers, and many transistors in systems that power most facets of modern life: communication, automation, data processing, and the list goes on.
